Filipino workers woke up Tuesday morning to an unfamiliar situation -- roads in Metro Manila were free of public vehicles, and commuting from their homes to their workplaces became a grueling journey.

Some walked for hours while many waited in vain on streets, hoping a bus, jeep or even a tricycle would appear.
This prompted the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to deploy two of its service buses to transport stranded passengers from Parañaque City to Cavite Tuesday afternoon amid the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon.
According to the PCG, two buses were deployed to the Paranaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) to transport passengers to their homes in Cavite for free. Each bus accommodated 25 passengers while strictly following social distancing measures against coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Temperature checks were also conducted before passengers could board the vehicles.
The first batch of passengers was transported from Parañaque to Imus, Cavite.
“Sa ngayon, pabalik ng PITX yung buses, try naman nila mag-ferry ng stranded passengers pa-Dasma (As of now, the buses are on their way back to PITX and they will try to ferry more stranded passengers going to Dasmariñas, Cavite),” the PCG told the Manila Bulletin.
While there is no instruction to continue the free ride initiative of the PCG in the coming days, they will try to transport as many passengers as they can, while they can.
