Amid the COVID-19 situation in the country, the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday announced that nearly nine (9) million learners from both public and private schools have already registered for the incoming School Year (SY) 2020-2021 on the second week of its remote enrollment.

The month-long enrollment this June is in preparation for the formal start of the new school year scheduled on August 24. For the first time in the recent years, school opening has been moved from June to August as the country continues to grapple with COVID-19. Enrollment on the 2nd week DepEd national enrollment data for SY 2020-2021 as of June 10 showed that there are 8, 666, 493 learners nationwide who have registered using remote or virtual enrollment system since June 1 for both public and private schools across all basic education levels. Of this number, 8, 369, 894 learners have enrolled in public schools and 255, 124 registered in private schools. The national enrollment data covers public and private schools as well as State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) and learners across all basic education level including Kindergarten, Elementary or Grades 1 to 6, Junior High School (JHS) or Grades 7 to 10, and Senior High School (SHS) or Grades 11 and 12. Also included non-graded learners with disabilities and those under the Alternative Learning System (ALS) program. DepEd’s latest data showed that there are 504, 528 learners who enrolled in Kindergarten; 4, 277, 763 in Elementary; 2, 859, 200 in JHS; and 932, 365 in SHS. There are also 30, 670 learners with disability who registered along with 61, 967 under the ALS program. The most number of enrollees were recorded from Region IV-A with 1, 341, 849 followed by National Capital Region (NCR) with 1, 305, 236 and Region III with 884, 882 which covers Kinder to SHS learners - including ALS and non-graded learners with disability. DepEd is implementing a “remote enrollment” system nationwide for this school year so learners can register without face-to-face interaction amid the threat of COVID-19. The enrollment coves all learners intending to attend SY 2020-2021 - including those who enrolled during the early registration period in February 2020. Based on DepEd’s enrollment guidelines, “no face-to-face registration” will be allowed during the first two weeks of June. Learners who cannot enroll using any remote method will be allowed in the last two weeks of June to “physically enroll” in strict compliance of physical distancing and health standards, and in coordination with the local government units (LGUs). Private schools, DepEd said, are covered by the enrollment policy set by the agency. School opening amid COVID-19 pandemic Due to the impacts of COVID-19, DepEd earlier said that there might be changes in the participation rate in schools. Based on the enrollment data for SY 2019-2020 provided by DepEd’s Education Management Information System Division-Planning Service, the total number of enrollment on all sectors and level of education was 27, 790, 114 for both formal and informal systems. Of this number, 27, 030, 391 are learners from Kinder to Grade 12 (formal system) and 759, 723 are in the ALS program (informal system). Last school year, there were 22, 572, 923 enrollees in public schools and 4, 203, 676 in private schools. Amid uncertainties on school opening due to the COVID-19 situation in the country, DepEd expressed optimism that parents will still enroll their children for the incoming school year to ensure that their education will continue. DepEd announced that it will “comply” with the directive of President Duterte “to postpone face-to-face classes until a vaccine is available.” DepEd, however, is also determined to push through with the school opening in August using blended or distance learning approach. The conduct of the remote enrollment nationwide, DepEd said, is very crucial in assessing learners’ household information which will help the schools to prepare and contextualize learning delivery mode in each locality. Since face-to-face classes may not be conducted, parents and learners can choose which alternative delivery mode will be suitable for them. DepEd will offer printed or digital modules delivered to the homes of the students, or picked up by their parents at designated places, within coordinated schedules; Online learning resources such as the DepEd Commons; and television or radio-based instruction.
