The government may soon be able to slap 35 percent to 50 percent tariff on rice imports to protect local farmers from cheaper imported rice amidst the lifting of the quantitative restriction (QR) on rice.

"The tariffs that will be collected after the QR is estimated at P25 billion a year and it would go to PhilRice and would be used to enhance the competitiveness of rice farmers,” Villar told reporters on the sidelines of a DENR event in Quezon City today.
