The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has approved the construction of the P4.37-billion Chico River pump irrigation project (PIP), which will benefit 8,700 hectares of farmlands in Cagayan and Apayao provinces.

Officials of NIA and the China CAMC Engineering Co., Ltd. led the project’s contract-signing for the construction of the pump house, sub-station, transmission line, diversion main canal, lateral canals, appurtenant structures, service/access road and terminal facilities.
It aims to provide substantial and timely water supply for irrigation in support of the country’s agricultural development.
It is projected to create 14,784 jobs during project implementation and 8,700 permanents jobs when the project becomes completely operational.
“We are confident that this project will be finished on time or even ahead of time because CAMC has a good reputation. This is a historical event because this is the first project undertaken by the present administration,” NIA Administrator Ricardo Visaya said.
The Chico River PIP, whose water sources come from Chico River, covers the municipalities of Tuao and Piat in Cagayan, and the municipality of Pinukpuk in Kalinga, Apayao.
It has a total service area of 8,700 hectares benefiting 4,350 families.
The acceleration of infrastructure and development of industries yielding robust growth across the archipelago is part of the present administration’s 10-point socio-economic agenda envisioned to reduce the poverty from 21.6 percent in 2015 to 13-15 percent in 2022 through infrastructure platforms.
NIA, as the lead government agency responsible in developing all possible sources of water for irrigation, serves as the country’s driving force to move forward to agricultural productivity, economic growth, and food sufficiency.
It also committed to continuously uphold the attainment of rice self-sufficiency and inclusive agricultural development through efficient project implementation.
