Palace to let constitutional process take its course on Sereno impeachment

(Ali Vicoy / MANILA BULLETIN) “We leave the matter of impeachment of the Chief Justice wholly to the Congress because that's a constitutional function of the House of Representatives,” Roque said during a press conference in Camarines Sur. "Once approved in the plenary, then the articles of impeachment will be submitted to the Senate and the Senate will have to organize itself as an impeachment court. We will allow the constitutional process to proceed,” he added. The House committee on justice earlier voted 33-1 approving the articles of impeachment against the Chief Justice. The articles of impeachment will be sent to the House plenary for approval. Sereno's removal from office has been sought over alleged failure to disclose her true wealth, alleged misuse of public funds, abuse of position, among others. President Duterte earlier denied that he was denied any effort to unseat Sereno from power. Recently, Malacanang denied that the President was bullying Sereno amid efforts to remove her via impeachment in Congress. Roque said Sereno has done a "magnificent job in alienating her colleagues" in the Supreme Court. He instead urged Sereno to listen to the sentiment of the judges and court employees who have demanded her resignation.
