SHINING MOMENT

SAN CARLOS CITY, Pangasinan — In line with the celebration of Correctional Consciousness Week of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology on October 22-28, inmates at the BJMP in San Carlos City will have their shining moment as they prove they can be productive, talented, and entertaining citizens. This chance will be given to them as they participate in sports, funny entertainment, spiritual programs, legal enlightenment, and a medical mission, among other activities. Basketball and chess games will be played among inmates, with jail officers themselves participating. A “Kilabot Mr. Pogi” comedy show to be performed by inmates is also much-awaited. UNOPPOSED MAYORS

TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite — Three reelectionist mayors and two vice mayoral aspirants in Cavite province are running unopposed in the upcoming elections, the lists of candidates (LoC) obtained from the Provincial Commission on Elections (Comelec) showed yesterday. Comelec officials named the three mayors as Jose R. Ricafrente Jr. of Rosario town, a Lakas-Partido Magdalo candidate; Enrico M. Alvarez of Noveleta, Nacionalista Party (NP); and Melandres G. de Sagun of Trece Martires City, United Nationalist Alliance (UNA). Meanwhile, Comelec also reported that one Lawyer Ireneo Anarna of Liberal Party (LP) has withdrawn his candidacy for the board member (BM) race in Cavite's 5th District last Tuesday, citing “health reasons.” (Anthony Giron)

P3-M PROJECTS TO MITIGATE FLOODS

BALANGA CITY, Bataan — To ease the problem of flooding problem in this city, the local government has allotted P3 million to develop infrastructure and rehabilitate the drainage system, Mayor Joet S. Garcia announced yesterday. Garcia said the fund will be used to improve elevated walkways in Barangay Poblacion and rehabilitate the sewers in Barangay San Jose where severe flooding had been observed in past typhoons. “We don’t want a repeat of what happened last August,” he said. GOOD GOVERNANCE

MANGALDAN, Pangasinan — The officials here were reminded on the principles of good governance during a seminar on good governance for barangay officials last Wednesday. The seminar was led by the Office of the Ombudsman for Luzon. Lawyer Racquel Cunanan Marayag, officer-in-charge of the Public Assistance and Corruption Prevention Office (PACPO) in Luzon, said the seminar is the first of a series in northern Luzon which reminds and encourages barangay and municipal officials of the principles of good governance which includes public accountability, transparency and integrity. ENERGY-SAVERS

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — By the end of this month, some 10,000 household electricity consumers in the first district of Oriental Mindoro will be enjoying the opportunity of using free compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). The office of Oriental Mindoro Congressman Rodolfo G. Valencia reported the 10,000 CFLs allocated to them by the Department of Energy (DOE) are now nearing 100 percent distribution. Valencia’s chief-of-staff Nico Valencia said the energy-efficient and saver lamps are now equally distributed to constituents of the province’s first district which includes this city and the municipalities of Puerto Galera, San Teodoro, Baco, Naujan, Victoria, Pola, and Socorro.
