Duterte jokingly blames reformed drug addicts for rice shortage

In his speech, Duterte recalled that after becoming president, he invited all those involved in illegal drugs to surrender to the government and undergo rehabilitation. He said there were so many skinny people among those who surrendered because they were not eating. “When I became President, I insisted on opening the records. How many hundreds of thousands nandyan sa lumabas? Payat halos lahat sila payat nakita mo lumabas sa TV (How many hundreds of thousands came out? Almost everyone we saw on TV were skinny),” he said. “Kinakain niyan shabu. Hindi 'yan kumakain. Alam mo kung bakit payat 'yan sila? Hindi sila kumakain (You know why? They ‘ate’ drugs, not food),” he added. Duterte said that those who volunteered to undergo rehabilitation started to eat properly again. “Ngayon marami na ang na-rehab, kaya tayo nagkaroon ng rice crisis. Kumakain na ang mga ulol, eh (Now a lot went through rehabilitation. We have a rice crisis because these idiots starter eating again),” he said. He also joked that maybe illegal drugs is a much more effective than giving rice. “Maybe next time pag may crisis na naman (when we face a crisis again), instead of... you distribute shabu,” Duterte said. “Kumain 'yung iba para (Feed drugs to some of them so) we can give rice for the others, especially the innocent and the good ones,” he added.
