Another rollback in pump prices today

By Myrna M. Velasco Local oil companies implement another rollback in pump prices starting to reflect the decline in crude prices in tee international market. The prices of petroleum products in the Philippines will rolled back again this week by the scale of ₱0.35 per liter for gasoline; and ₱0.70 per liter for diesel. For kerosene product, which is also a base for aviation fuel, its cost at the pumps will be reduced by ₱0.75 per liter, as advised by the industry players. As of this writing, the oil companies that already advised on price cuts include Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, Seaoil, Chevron, PetroGazz, PTT Philippines, Total and Phoenix Petroleum – with the adjustments effective on Tuesday (April 6). The rest of their competitors are anticipated to follow. Amid the industry malady on collapsing prices and precipitously shrinking demand, the oil companies are still taking the fore in helping front-liners in the country’s ferocious battle against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Several oil companies have announced various forms of assistance and support they are extend¬ing to the very essential segments of the workforce during these menacing times – including those for medical workers, supermarket workers; food delivery personnel and the law enforcement agencies manning the checkpoints. Pilipinas Shell, for one, has been helping healthcare professionals of several hospitals in their commute to work and has also been aiding in the delivery of medical goods via its partner-transport groups like BGC Bus, Ceres Bus (Vallacar) and Ube Transport (Air 21). Shell noted its retail stations have “alternated as pick-up points and rest stops for our front-liners; while our SELECT sites have begun to serve free food products for health care workers, police force, military men and logistics drivers.” The oil firm, with the backing of its retailers, had likewise donated food packs, portable washing facilities to the military and health care front-liners. And to its customers, it will be distributing Vitamin C packets to those who will be filling up at its stations. Total Philippines also announced that it will be providing free fuel to medical front-liners at its 23 specified stations in Luzon and Visayas. “In appreciation for the service of healthcare workers in the fight against COVID-19, selected Total stations across the country will provide free fuel for medical frontliners,” the company said, emphasizing that “the first 30 qualified vehicles to gas up in participating stations each day are entitled to free fuel.” The oil firm added that “medical frontliners driving their vehicles (i.e. cars, vans or motorcycles) can avail of up to ₱300 worth of free fuel per day upon presenting their valid ID.” At the same time, the shuttle buses accredited by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) serving Metro Manila can avail up to ₱1,000 worth of free fuel per day.
