Bike Fest to make Iloilo City sports tourism destination

By Philippine News Agency Organizers of the annual Bike Festival, which is now on its fifth year, want to push this city as a sports tourism destination. “We’re leading towards tourism component,” said Architect Wilfredo Sy. Jr, festival director of the 2018 Bike Festival in a press conference on Friday. He said the first and third years of the event advocated for road sharing, bike infrastructure on the second year, and biking as sports event on its fourth year. This year’s festival slated May 1-6, is themed “Iloilo, Your BIKEcation Destination”. “The reason for choosing tourism as the theme aims that it will not only be specifically for bikers but inclusive for all participants. It is for everyone to enjoy,” he said. Iloilo City has already been identified as one of the top 10 bike-friendly cities in the country but the long term goal is to be the most bike-friendly city in the Philippines given by the PhilBike this September, he added. The metropolis already has edge compared with other cities to include good bike lane, university loop, strong cycling community and an ordinance that promotes biking. Meanwhile, the festival organized by the city government and the Megaworld Corporation, has 16 events to include bike clinic, photo exhibit, logo animation contest, transport forum, BMX exhibition, ARTBike, Karera sa Ciudad/XC Challenge, amazing bicycle race, visiTOUR, family fun race, Pinta Siklista, Porma Siklista, grand fun ride and Bike Tiangge, among others. Sy said that while most of the events are within the Megaworld vicinity, yet the Cycling Hearts Exhibit, Artbike, XC Challenge and visiTOUR entail moving within the city area. The grand fun ride will cover 16-kilometer stretch that will be participated by more than 5,000 bikers. A registration fee of PHP50 will be collected. Those who are interested to join are encouraged to visit the Iloilo City Sports Council Office or the Megaworld Corporation.
