ILOILO CITY— The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM-6) emphasized that demography can help address the challenges of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the Western Visayas region.

“To fight the threat of COVID-19, it is better to understand demographic factors facilitating its spread, and not just medical intervention,” said POPCOM-6 Regional Director Harold Alfred Marshall.
This, as POPCOM-6 leads the regional commemoration of Population and Development (POPDEV) Week, which will lasts until November 29.
POPCOM-6 is one of the government agencies that created the Demographic Vulnerability Tool, which assessed the vulnerability of communities and households to COVID-19.
In Western Visayas region, it was found that 3.4 million people are living in households that have 20-square-meters or less. These are around 693,122 hourseholds.
“With an average of five people living in tight-space houses, it would be difficult to practice physical distancing. The spread of COVID-19 will eventually be hastened,” Marshall noted.
POPCOM-6 also found that 255,208 senior citizens are living in cramped spaces, which makes them more vulnerable to getting infected with COVID-19.
There are also 52,278 senior citizens who are living alone. This makes it harder for them to get basic commodities such as food and medicine.
POPCOM-6 is urging local government units (LGUs) and other sectors to take into consideration demographic factors to make the right policies.
“It takes convergence of efforts and experts to ensure that our actions are not knee-jerk, but sustainable and developmental,” Marshall added.
