The Vice President then congratulated the organizers behind the successful opening ceremony that saw more than 5,000 athletes from 11 competing nations who took center stage. She also thanked Filipino performers and athletes who participated in the opening of the 11-day biennial event. "Nakaka-proud maging Pinoy! Maraming salamat sa ating mga atleta, world champions, mga tagapagtanghal, and to everyone behind the #SEAGames2019 opening ceremony," she said in a tweet. (I’m so proud to be Pinoy! Thank you very much to all our athletes, world champions, performers and to eveyone behind the #SEAGames2019 opening ceremony.) "Ang dami nating maipagmamalaki bilang isang bansa—at pinakamalakas tayo kapag ang alab ng puso ay iisa #WeWinAsOne," she added with an emoticon of a Philippine flag. (We have a lot of things to be proud as nation—and we are the strongest if our hearts are one #WeWinAsOne.) President Rodrigo Duterte formally led the opening of the games. He was joined by Sultan of Brunei Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. They were both seen dancing and clapping during the Philippine team’s parade with Hotdog song “Manila.” The ceremony featured local sports legends and world champions who held the SEA Games Federation flag. Several Filipino athletes also paraded at the arena, with many waving the national flags. Robredo was not able to watch the opening ceremony live, but she made sure her voice was heard in supporting Filipino athletes. “Kagabi nasa isa akong event. Nakita ko iyong video noong nakarating na ako ng bahay. Napakaganda ng opening lalo na iyong panahon na lumabas iyong mga atleta,” she said on her Sunday radio show, “BISErbisyong Leni.” (Last night I was at an event. I only watched the video when I arrived home. The opening was amazing especially during the time when the athletes came out.) “Maraming naging problema, maraming puna. Sa atin lang, iyong problema saka puna andiyan lang iyan pero ngayon na napapalaban 'yung ating mga atleta, sana buong buo iyong suporta natin,” she said. (We had a lot of problems, criticisms. For me, the problems and criticisms are just there, but now our athletes are competing, let us give them our full support.) The Vice President also took the opportunity to congratulate John “Rambo” Chicano, who got the first gold for the Philippines in men’s triathlon, and silver medalist Kim Remolino.
