Former rapper-turned comedian Michael V’s parody of the smash hit “Hayaan mo sila” by OC Dawgs and Ex-Battalion has now garnered 2.3-million views and more than 60,000 likes six days after it was uploaded on YouTube earning a spot as one of the most trending videos this week.

Michael V’s take, full of humor and sarcasm, although meant to make people laugh, also has a social commentary on the seemingly prevalent culture nowadays of merely copy-pasting original work and claiming it to be your own.
In fact, many covers of songs even go as far as claiming that their “version” is better than the original.
Ripe with the hypnotic beat of the original song, Michael V’s parody starts off with a verse that immediately tells the audience that this parody is not merely meant for laughs but also to infuse a moral lesson, quite unexpected in a video originally aired over popular GMA-7 TV show “Bubble Gang,” a comedy show that has had a cult following over the years.
“Viral video na naman. Ambilis sumikat n’ya. Pwede mong pagkakitaan, dapat mautak ka lang. (Another viral video. It can easily become a hit. You can make a living out of it, just be clever),” goes the first chorus of the parody and right away elicits a feeling that this parody is a bit different from the love-problems-inspired original.
“Ang problema sa orig, ay iisipin pa, gayahin mo sila mas madaling mangopya. (The problem with an original is you still have to create it, just copy because it’s easier),” Michael V advises wannabes.
Although that was what he actually said, the entire song actually argues against it. Challenging artists instead to be creative rather than just copy other people’s work and even think of ways to elude being sued or made accountable for plagiarizing the original artist’s composition.
Backed by his Bubble Gang costar Sef Cadayona the video shows Michael V in scenes similar to that of the original, like in steel staircase, or at a sidewalk spitting rhymes.
The video is so well thought of, even though it’s meant for a comedy program that even the name of group Copy Cats EX-B is also a parody of the original artists’ name OC Dawgs EX-B. Clever huh? You got to hand it to Michael V not only to deliver the punchlines but also to ensure that every detail is intentionally placed to serving a purpose that complete the entire performance.
Near the end of the video, members of the original artists are shown emerging and eventually catch Michael V and Cadayona still singing the line: “Gayahin mo sila pero pabor sa’yo.” (Copy them but make it work in your favor).
To this, the original artists reacts by collaring the two comedians and mauling the two “copycats”.
