REFLECTIONS TODAY
Following the story of the rich man who refused Jesus’ invitation to sell what he has and then to follow Jesus, Peter, in the name of his fellow disciples, asks Jesus what is in store for them. In contrast to the man, they have left everything and unquestioningly followed Jesus. Acknowledging this, Jesus refers to many possessions regarded as essentials in the culture of that time: home, brothers and sisters, mother and father, children, and land. The believers know that this partly comes to pass in their belonging to the Christian community. Their houses and homes are where the disciples gather. But the greater reward is eternal life in the age to come. Still, the community must accept that persecutions are a part of “this present age.” The Gospel of the cross, which is the power and wisdom of God, involves suffering also in their case. But facing and accepting suffering marks their solidarity with the Lord.
Gospel • MARK 10:28-31
Peter began to say to Jesus, “We have given up everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel 30who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. But many that are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
