SILAY CITY, Negros Occidental (PNA) – The Bureau of Local Government Finance has named Silay City Treasurer’s Office as “Best Implementer” among city treasury offices in Western Visayas in 2012. A plaque of recognition was awarded to the city represented by City Treasurer Elsie Jimenea during the Annual Pre-Planning and Year–End Reassessment Performance Conference Workshop of Provincial, City and Municipal Assessors and Treasurers held in Iloilo City recently. “The regular implementation of 5S helped boost our morale because our facilities were organized and clean and it created good relationship among our co-workers. Our office is classified into divisions providing people with easy transactions,” she said. 5S stands for sorting of old files, systemizing, sweeping, sanitizing and self-discipline.

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental (PNA) – Drug users in the country have dropped from 6.7 million in 2004 to 1.7 million in 20008, the Dangerous Drugs Board through the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) reported here recently. DDB Deputy Executive Director Amador Pabustan, who was here for the Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Caravan and the Negros Occidental Sangguniang Kabataan Federation’s Kontra Droga launch, noted that the drug problem in Western Visayas was not as serious as compared to other regions in the country.

ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PIA) – The Mines and Geosciences Bureau has completed the detailed maps of towns Dao and Sigma towns in Capiz province and the towns of Kalibo and Numancia in Aklan province. MGB-6 geologist May Magarzo said detailed geohazard mapping produces geohazard maps on a scale of 1;10,000. “The detailed geohazard mapping allows a closer look at the geohazard condition in the field,” Magarzo said. “This, as compared to the rapid geohazard assessment on a scale of 1:50,000 conducted in the previous years. She added that geohazard mapping involves ocular assessment of each sitio in barangays, as compared to rapid geohazard mapping which uses the barangay proper as its point of reference.

BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar (PIA) – Police Senior Superintendent Brigido B. Unay initiated the formation of the Philippine National Police Press Corps (PNP Press Corps) in a recent meeting held at the PNP provincial headquarters here. Unay said the meeting was important as the police believe media is an important partner in securing local government units (LGUs). He said the police here will play a vital role in ensuring clean, fair and peaceful elections in 2013, but “we can’t do this alone; we have to partner with provincial media. Media participation is needed to make sure the 2013 polls are orderly and we need media to provide the public with accurate and timely information.” Unay said a regular monthly meeting will most likely be held with local media. Over 25 print and broadcast media practitioners attended the first-in-15 years meeting with the local PNP.

ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PNA) – The city government here is prepared to respond to any weather disturbance that may occur this Yuletide season. This was the assurance given by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog although the low pressure area (LPA) which entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility early Monday, is not expected to affect this part of the country and also not expected to escalate into a tropical cyclone. Mabilog said the city will activate personnel who were also behind preparations conducted during typhoon “Pablo,” part of which was preemptive evacuation. “We pray it doesn’t happen. Otherwise we will again do the same. We are prepared,” he stressed.
