By Erwin Beleo AGOO, La Union – A candidate for barangay captain was charged with multiple murder in connection with the assassination of former La Union 2nd district Representative Eufranio “Franny” Eriguel and two of his bodyguards in Barangay Capas here last Saturday night.

Cherry Ontalan, chief of staff of Rep. Sandra Eriguel, wife of Franny, said in press conference Monday afternoon (May 14, 2018) that a criminal complaint has been filed against an individual, which was identified by sources as a certain Felizardo Villanueva, a candidate for barangay chairman in Capas. Villanueva allegedly was among those who have linked with the suspects because of messages from his cell phone seized by authorities after the killing. Franny was killed along with his escorts Bong Tubera and Bobby Ordinario. Eight other individuals were wounded in the incident and two of them are still in critical condition at the hospital. Rep. Eriguel and her family believe that politics was behind the assassination of her husband. “The family believes that the murder of Franny was politically-motivated because this was happened close to the election day. I respectfully appeal to President Duterte to help fast track and resolve the investigation on the murder of my husband. This cowardly act should not be tolerated. Political violence is not the answer,” Rep. Eriguel said. Franny was then speaking at the meeting de avance of candidates in the incident area when assailants shot them with M16 Armalite rifle. Suspects boarded a black Toyota Montero and a white Innova in initiating the assassination.
