Two policewomen who were abducted in Sulu released by captors

Oscar Albayalde (Mark Balmores/Manila Bulletin file photo) Director General Oscar Albayalde, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said that the negotiations initiated by local government officials and community leaders have helped a lot in securing the freedom of two lady cops. “They were released to the people close to Governor Sakur Tan,” said Albayalde. It was recalled that on April 29, gunmen forcibly took the two policewomen identified as PO2 Benierose Alvarez and PO1 Dinah Gumahad and their two male companions identified as Jacksalem Blas and Faizal Ahidji in Patikul town. Ahidji was released on May 7 while Blas was freed a few days later. It is not clear if ransom was paid for the freedom of the two policewomen as their kidnappers had demanded P5 million for their release. All that they have, according to Albayalde, is the information that local officials of Jolo were negotiating for the unconditional release of the two cops. “They will undergo medical examination and debriefing,” said Albayalde.
