Ex-DSWD secretary asks permission from Sandiganbayan for Europe trip

  By Czarina Nicole Ong Former Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Esperanza Cabral is asking permission from the Sandiganbayan Second Division to travel to Spain, Morocco and Portugal from November 21 to December 3, 2018. Cabral stated in her motion for leave to travel abroad that she would be joining her husband, Bienvenido Cabral, in a cruise in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, her 75th birthday, and the Christmas season. She added that she has booked and planned the trip with her family long before the filing of the charges against her. Cabral voluntarily surrendered before the anti-graft court on August 3, 2018 and has posted her bail bond amounting to P100,000. Cabral has already been arraigned on August 31, and she said that she is not a flight risk. She added that she has no intention to abscond and undertakes to be present when the trial starts. Cabral is one of the co-accused in the case filed against former Caloocan Rep. Mari Mitzi Cajayon, who is currently the executive director of the Council for the Welfare of Children. They were accused of violating Section 3(e) of Republic Act 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, Article 217 of the Revised Penal Code, and malversation through falsification due to their involvement in the P10-million priority development assistance fund (PDAF) scam.
