TIP-OFF LOCATES MAYOR’S GUNMAN
A community bound by residents of the same faith did not serve as a safe haven for the suspected gunman in the murder of Mayor Erlinda M. Domingo of Maconacon, Isabela, a ranking police official said yesterday, following the arrest of Marsibal Abduhadi, alias “Bagwis.” Senior Superintendent Richard A. Albano, Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director, said Abduhadi’s whereabouts was tipped off to police by people in who knew him in Salaam Compound, Barangay Culiat, Tandang Sora, Q.C. Abduhadi was allegedly sniffing “shabu” when joint police operatives barged into his house at 11:30 p.m. on Friday. (Freddie C. Velez)
300 PUPILS GET NEW SCHOOL
DAGUPAN CITY, Pangasinan — Around 300 pupils from a flood-prone school building in Careenan, Poblacion Oeste will no longer contend with submerged classrooms as they are set to transfer to a new three-storey building next month. Mayor Benjamin S. Lim, who envisions an integrated school complex to rise at the Engineering Compound, here, said the new school building with 15 classrooms will accommodate not only the pupils from the Juan P. Guadiz Elementary School (JPGES) but also some pupils from the West Central Elementary School I. (Liezle Basa Iñigo)
TEACHER GUNNED DOWN IN MALASIQUE
MALASIQUI, Pangasinan — A female public school teacher was gunned down by men riding in tandem on a motorcycle as she was walking home from school in this town last Friday, police reported yesterday. Probers said they were still clueless on the motive in the killing of Myra Barerra, 36, of Barangay Canan Sur, here. Initial investigation showed that she was attacked between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday. She was shot at close range with a .45-caliber pistol, probers said. (Liezle Basa Iñigo)
C.P.L.A. GIVES UP 11 FIREARMS
CAMP MELCHOR F. DELA CRUZ, Isabela — Several members of the Cordillera People’s Liberation Army (CPLA) surrendered 11 more high-powered firearms to the Army’s 501st Brigade based in Tabuk, Kalinga on Friday. Colonel Loreto C. Magundayao Jr., army spokesman in Gamu, Isabela, said the guns included seven M-16 rifles; three M-14s; and a Carbine rifle. They were formally turned over by CPLA members to Colonel Roger D. Salvador of the army’s 501st Brigade, Magundayao said. (Freddie G. Lazaro)
MARINDUQUE SETS EXAMPLE FOR POLLS
BOAC, Marinduque — This island province may be seen as geographically small but its consistent record for having peaceful elections may set an example for other politically-torn areas, said a ranking police official. Senior Superintendent Edwin Capanza, Marinduque Police Provincial Office (PPO) director, said a recent “unity walk” involved candidates running for various positions. Capanza said the activity signifies the politicians’ pledge to support the campaign of the police, military, and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for a peaceful conduct of the polls in May. Also joining the walk through the towns of Mogpog, Gasan, Sta. Cruz, Buenavista and Torrijos was Msgr. Ramon Magdurulan. (Danny J. Estacio)
