Police identified the victims as Francis De Dios, 50; Kenneth Dave Bade, 21; Billy Joe Francisco, 30; Franz Michael A Fernandez, 25; Deen Michael Dela Pena, 23; John Lemmor Tismo Castillo, 20; Zeus Ivan R Reyes, 24; Michael Paloma, 24; and Vincent De Leon,19.
The jeepney driver identified as Roderick Doroteo Padua, 29, also sustained injuries.
They were all rushed to Pasig City General Hospital for treatment.
Pasig City Police Chief Colonel Moises Billaceran Jr. said the passenger jeepney driven by Padua countered the flow of traffic along the southbound lane of Amang Rodriguez Avenue in Barangay Rosario, Pasig.
“When Padua made a counter flow, he drove faster knowing that no vehicle was going towards his direction,” he said.
Upon reaching the area of the accident at around 9 p.m., a pedestrian suddenly crossed the road, a police report showed.
The jeepney driver tried to avoid the pedestrian and veered right while stepping on the breaks.
This caused the vehicle to roll over and crash on the road pavement, injuring all of its passengers and the driver, he said.
According to Villaceran, the passengers sustained broken bones, bruises, and cuts due to the accident.
He said that some of the passengers have already left the hospital.
The police chief said that Padua is now under the custody of Pasig City Police.
Charges for reckless imprudence resulting to multiple physical injury and damage to property will be filed against the jeepney driver, he added.
