4.7 EARTHQUAKE

SINAIT, Ilocos Sur — A moderately strong quake with a strength of 4.7 magnitude rocked some areas in Ilocos Sur on Monday night, but did not cause any damage to property, authorities said. Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Researcher Porferio de Peralta said the quake happened at 8:54 p.m. with its epicenter at 23 kilometers northwest of Sinait, Ilocos Sur with a depth of 33 kilometers. De Peralta said the tremor was felt at Intensity 2 in Sinait, Ilocos Sur and Vigan City. He said the quake was tectonic in origin and was not to cause aftershocks. (Freddie G. Lazaro)

HIGHWAY ROBBERS STRIKE IN CAVITE

CARMONA, Cavite — Two persons lost P1 million to five motorcycle-riding armed men in a daring holdup last Monday at the public market in Barangay Maduya of this town. The robbers pulled off the heist as one Vicente Orobia, 47, and a certain Marivic D. M. Ocampo, 35, were on board a red Toyota GLI car (TTW-312). The robbers pointed their guns at the car and ordered its driver to pull over around 8 a.m. as the car passed by a hump. The victims were then mulcted of their cash and the gunmen sped off. BIÑAN DAY

BIÑAN CITY, Laguna — Biñan City marked its 68th liberation day yesterday by honoring World War 2 veterans and public school teachers for their contribution to the society. Mayor Marlyn Alonte-Naguiat  led the flower offering before the statue of national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal with government officials, war veterans, and other residents at the city plaza at 7 a.m. “With a theme of  “Beterano: Sa Bawat Tagumpay,  Kasama Ka,” 45 people composed of World War 2 veterans and the spouses of the late veterans received awards. Teachers were also given plaques of recognition while the top 12 tax payers, led by Isuzu Philippines Corp., were also awarded. (Ferdinand F. Castro)

LIMAY COPS NAB DYNAMITE FISHERS

LIMAY, Bataan — Policemen here reported yesterday the arrest of four suspected illegal fishers and confiscated from them their dynamited fish, fishnet and fishing boat. Chief Inspector Crizalde M. Conde, chief of police here, identified the suspects as Dune Patiana, Jayson Paguio, Ricardo Paguio, and Edgar Paguio, all residents in Barangay Lamao, here, around 11 a.m. on Monday after the Limay Police Station received a tip on their activities. Police seaborne agents led by PO2 Al Nashram Sarahadil were joined by elements of the Limay Bantay Dagat in catching the suspects. (Mar T. Supnad)

SORTEO FESTIVAL

CARMONA, Cavite — This fast-progressing town is celebrating its week-long 156th founding anniversary with the triennial Sorteo Festival which is one of a kind in the country and Asia. The Festival activities, with the four-night “Sorteo ng Bukid ng Bayan,” (Lottery of Town Land Parcels), starting February 19, are expected to draw local and foreign tourists in the area. Mayor Dahlia A. Loyola, her husband Roy, Cavite’s 5th District representative, town councilors, and other administration officials have organized a program for the anniversary events that are set mainly at the municipal plaza.
