Lesser-known senatorial candidates who took part in the fourth installment of ABS-CBN's Harapan 2019 embraced the underdog's role as they somewhat acknowledged how big a long shot their victory would be this coming May.
"Ang madadala ko sa Senado ay pangalang walang bahid ng korapsyon (What I can bring to the Senate is name not smeared by corruption)," said lawyer Diosdado "Dado" Padilla during the opening portion of the town hall-style debate wherein the participants were asked about their vision for the Philippine Senate.
"Tulungan niyo akong buksan ang kan-dado ng Senado para sa mahihirap (Help me open the padlock for the poor in the Senate)" the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas stalwart said in an obvious pun using his nickname.
Following the underdog theme Labor Win alliance senatorial candidate Leody de Guzman, who described the makeup of the current Senate as "elitist."
"Pangarap ko sa Senado na maging Senado ng mamamayan at hindi ng iilan (My dream for the Senate is to make it a Senate of the people and not just the few)," De Guzman, who is running under the Partido Lakas ng Masa, said as he tried to strike a chord with the audience.
Meanwhile, Ilocano lawyer Ernesto Arellano, who was visibly dismayed after his time on the microphone was cut mid-speech, insinuated that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) itself was preventing "poor" candidates from joining the polls.
His Exhibit A: Arellano said his two colleagues from the Katipunan ng Kamalayang Kayumanggi party was branded as “nuisance candidates" by Comelec.
"Isang hindi magandang palatandaan dahil ginagawa ang eleksyon para sa mga milyonaryo lamang (This is not a good sign because the elections are being tailored for millionaires only)," Arellano said of the disqualification of his party mates.
Each of the eight candidates who took part in ABS-CBN's fourth debate was given only 90 seconds to explain their vision for the Senate as well as the pieces of legislation that they would prioritize should they win in the polls.

Later, in the "fast talk" segment, Arellano was asked by host Doris Bigornia about what word he would use to define nuisance candidates.
"Mga mandarambong (They are the plunderers)," the gray-haired bet said.
ABS-CBN host Alvin Elchico said all 62 senatorial candidates were invited. However, only 36 of them attended while 26 did not due to various reasons. #MatalinongBoto2019
