While embassy and diplomatic events are, in themselves, quite fascinating, the people there can also be even more so. There is an art to circulating during such events which a select few have, and they are always armed with delightful conversation and a convivial, welcoming air. And then sometimes, there is no particular occasion but the guests make the whole thing special.
Recently, at a gathering at the Dutch ambassador Ton Boon Von Ochssee's beautiful residence, I was fortunate enough to run into artist Betsy Westendorp. I confess I was star-struck; after all, in college, we took up her work in art studies classes.
Ms. Westendorp and I chatted for a bit and she told me she had an exhibit at the Manila Contemporary in Whitespace entitled "Betsy Westendorp: Portrait of An Artist." The exhibit featured a room designed by renowned artist Ramon Antonio and her paintings, so that exhibit attendees could feel what it was like to live in a home surrounded by Betsy’s art.
She then mentioned that the Dutch ambassador’s residence had been designed by Ramon Antonio, and indeed, scattered about the house were many interesting works of art. It was a pleasant coincidence, and certainly a memorable one.
Another interlude I had the good fortune to enjoy recently was a dinner with Kate Kritwutikon, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) director for the Philippines and Singapore, and TAT officer Elaine Seah, who were in town recently for an 11-day promotion of Thailand that took them from Manila to Cebu and Davao. Also present were my dear friends Sern Chupikulchai, Thai Airways Country General Manager and his wife Priyanuch. I confess I felt like a Pinoy culinary guide as we indulged ourselves on three lechons done three ways: Spanish lechon which was stuffed with paella, French lechon which was stuffed with truffled rice, and lechon de leche.
The next day, all of us met again for the opening of the Thai Festival at Market! Market! in Taguig. The festival featured Thai products and tourist spots such as the Siam Niramit Theater Group and the Rose Garden, which brings to mind our Nayong Pilipino. Participants could see Thai local artisans demo fruit carving and umbrella painting. Delicious Thai dishes and delicacies, as well as other popular Thai attractions, were gathered together in one venue so that Pinoys could immerse themselves in a slice of Thai culture.
