Bataan cops nab suspect in 2006 slay of DZRH reporter
Morong, Bataan — Police arrested yesterday morning an alleged member of the New People’s Army (NPA) suspected of gunning down a field reporter of radio station DZRH eight years ago in this town.
Senior Superintendent Audie Atienza, Bataan Police Provincial Office (PPO) director, said that Nestor Nazareno, 57, of Poblacion, Morong, Bataan was caught off guard when collared by his men at his house in Barangay Poblacion, here.
The arrest of Nazareno was based on a warrant of arrest issued by Judge Manuel Tan of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 2 in Balanga City for the murder of DZRH reporter Gary Aquino in February, 2006.
“He did not resist arrest when we surprised him at his house at around 5:30 in the morning. His house was surrounded by policemen and he had no chance to run,” said Supt. Joshua F Alejandro, chief of the Bataan PPO Intelligence who hatched the plan a week ago.
Alejandro’s team was backed up by operatives from the Morong Municipal Police Statoin (MPS) led by Senior Inspector Jeffrey Onde and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Bataan (CIDG-Bataan) led by Chief Inspector Ruben Tampis.
“We have monitored his (Nazareno) activities for the past few months and he was hiding from one place to another in Metro Manila until we sighted him in Morong,” said Alejandro.
Asked what prompted Nazareno to kill Aquino, who was a low-profile local newsman, Atienza said: “Parang nayabangan lang itong suspek sa mediaman dahil mahilig daw magsabi na malakas siya kay mayor (It seemed the mediaman had pissed off the suspect because he bragged of being close to the mayor then).”
Citing the suspect’s profile, the Bataan PPO director said Nazareno is allegedly notorious in the town being a member of the NPA.
