Young man killed in motorcycle mishap

BACARRA, Ilocos Norte — A young man was killed on Friday the 13th (March 13) when the Honda Wave motorcycle he was driving rammed a concrete welcome arch in Barangay Pasiocan, this town, lawmen said. Police investigators identified the victim as Noel Galapon, 20. He died of serious injuries in the body at about 3:45 a.m. last Friday while he was being treated by doctors
at the Gov. Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital in Laoag City. Ironically, the victim came earlier from the same hospital where he visited relatives who also figured in another vehicular accident. He was driving his Honda Wave motorcycle on his way home when the Friday the 13th accident occurred.

Mother of four-day-old baby shot dead in Laoag

LAOAG CITY — A 31-year-old woman, who gave birth four days ago, was killed instantly when a gunman shot her in her house at Barangay 12, San Isidro, this city last Thursday, police said. Probers assigned by Supt. Sterling Blanco, city police chief, said the assailant, armed with a caliber .45 pistol, barged in and shot the victim, identified as Edna Cacactin. The killer fled, riding an orange Honda Wave motorcycle. “Buti na lang hindi tinamaan ng bala yong baby niya na nasa loob din ng bahay,” a witness said. Investigators said they are looking into the love angle as motive
in the killing.

Gov’t to hire 670 nurses in Bicol


LEGAZPI CITY — The government will hire 670 nurses in Bicol under the “Nurses Assigned to Rural Service” (NARS) program, said the Region 5 office of the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE 5) here. Ernesto Bihis, DoLE 5 regional director, said that registered nurses, who remained unemployed for several years and whose family-member was displaced by the global economic crisis, can now apply for employment with the DoLE regional and provincial offices. He said the newly-hired nurses will serve for six months starting on April 1 and will be paid a monthly salary of R8,000.
