Creation of Mayon Volcano natural park sought
A bill seeking to create the Mayon Volcano as a natural park has been filed at the House of Representatives.
Albay 3rd District Representative Fernando Gonzales filed a bill to create a Mayon Volcano Natural Park (MVNP) to formalize the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) Act that will give necessary protection to the famous volcano.
Under the bill, Gonzales said, a Protected Areas Management Board (PAMB) will be created.
Once approved, he said, the government can allocate a budget for its management operations.
“With this, I can assure that Mayon Volcano will be protected,” Gonzales said, adding that the slopes of the perfectly-coned volcano will also be protected.
While Mounts Masaraga and Malinao are already covered by NIPAS, Mayon Volcano is not, said Gonzales.
He said the three mountains must be placed under one umbrella under NIPAS.
‘The creation of PAMB will undergo a process and be chosen by the local government. Residents, civil society, preservation societies, and everybody else will be part of the spectrum,” said Gonzales.
