DOTC: New MRT-3 trains to be delivered in 2015
The Chinese supplier of the new train coaches for the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) 3 has promised the Philippine government that it would deliver the 48 light rail vehicles (LRVs) within the next two years.
According to the Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC), Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co. Ltd. CNR Group (Dalian) has made a commitment to expedite the manufacturing of the additional LRVs for the MRT 3 by dedicating more workers in the project.
“Our commuters deserve better services at MRT 3, and the addition of more LRVs is long overdue. We are doing all we can to get them here as soon as possible, and Dalian has expressed the same commitment to riding public,” DoTC Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said.
The DoTC has ordered Dalian to proceed with the contract right after the Makati City Regional Trial Court dismissed last Friday the case filed by private owners of the MRT 3 system.
In a notice to proceed dated February 21, 2014, the DoTC said Dalian is to design, supply and deliver 48 LRVs with on-board communication system, automatic train protection, and train stimulator in exchange of P3.759 billion.
“The DOTC successfully fought for public interest and defended its position in court, but the true winners are the riders of MRT 3. The supplier can now start manufacturing the 48 brand new LRVs, which will be delivered in tranches starting in the second half of 2015,” Abaya added.
Once the new LRVs are commissioned into the MRT 3 system, the current three-car configuration of train sets arriving every three minutes will be improved to four-car configuration that will arrive every 2.5 minutes to serve more passengers.
