The Department of Agriculture (DA) is set to establish contour farming demonstration sites for corn in the Visayas and Mindanao, as part of the agency’s soil erosion and climate change adaptation measures. Under the Sustainable Corn Production in Sloping Areas (SCOPSA), DA Assistant Secretary Edilberto de Luna said DA Secretary Proceso Alcala has already identified several sites in Iloilo, Bukidnon, Davao and Cotabato for the program implementation. Contour farming is the practice of planting across a slope following contour lines, thus creating a water break which reduces the formation of gullies and rills caused by cascading water, which is a major cause of soil erosion.
