Fil-Dutch-American model is Miss New York 2014
Candace Kendall (real name: Candace Kuykendall), 25, a professional model of mixed Filipino-Dutch-American descent, was named 2014 Miss New York Sunday night at the Performing Arts Center in Purchase, New York.
The former Miss Teen New York will be representing her city at the upcoming Miss USA pageant, the winner of which will go on to compete at the 2014 Miss Universe tilt.
The Rochester, New York native took to her Twitter account (@CandaceMarie3) to express gratitude, posting, “Thank you so much everyone for the support!! I am truly honored to be your new Miss New York USA!”
In a previous ABS-CBN News interview, Kendall shared what she knows of her Pinoy roots.
“My father is Dutch and Filipino, my last name Kuykendall is Dutch, but my grandparents were from the Philippines, and I heard a little bit of Tagalog from them but I don’t know how to speak it myself.”
Kendall acknowledged the advantages that her mixed lineage afforded her as a professional model.
“I’m fortunate to have a Filipino background… It kinda gives a look where a lot more people can relate to it. It helps me in being in Asia to model there,” she related.
Given the chance, Kendall said she would want to visit the Philippines saying, “I would definitely consider that. I just want to pursue my dream first of becoming Miss USA. In the future, I think that would be a great opportunity.”
