Former marine is PH bet in Mister World 2014
Filipino-American model John Spainhour will be representing the country in this year’s Mister World pageant to be held in Torbay, England on June 15.
Spainhour, a former US Marine who fought in Iraq for eight months, considers his military background a plus in the competition.
“My prior job required a lot of discipline, a lot of hard work, a lot of dedication. If you apply that to anything in life, it’s going to benefit you greatly,” Spainhour said in an interview with ABS-CBN News,Friday.
Established in 1996 as the male counterpart of Miss World, Mister World includes extreme sports challenges and usually draws professional athletes as competitors.
Despite the short notice given him, Spainhour attested that he is already deep into preparing himself for the competition both ”mentally and physically.”
“I know I’m going to have to pick it up in the gym and get fit again, not just for modeling, but also for performing physically,” he added.
Asked if he is pressured to do better than model Andrew Wolff’s second place finish in 2012, Spainhour answered, “I am not… because he’s a different person than I am. I’m trying to do my best and I’m competing with myself to do better. It’s not like I’ve got to compare myself to other people.”
The model admitted however, that the still needs to improve on things like “speaking in front of crowds.”
He explained, “I’ve always been self-conscious…so, of course, that’s the biggest thing I’ll be facing.”
Spainhour shared that he will promote the hospitality of Filipinos during the pageant.
“I’ll tell them how beautiful it is here, and how nice and easy it is to come here and get along with everyone and experience the Philippines,” he said.
