Full-blast Holy Week road re-blocking along EDSA set

Manila, Philippines — Heavy traffic may be expected during the observance of the Holy Week.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Public of Public Works and Highways agreed to undertake full-blast road re-blocking activities along Epifanio delos Santos Ave. (EDSA) during the Holy Week.

The agreement was reached during yesterday’s meeting between MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino and Reynaldo Tagudando, director of DPWH National Capital Region (NCR), at the MMDA office in Makati City.

Tolentino was able to convince Tagudando on the need to finish all the road re-blocking works during the Holy Week, from Holy Tuesday to Eastern Sunday, instead of conducting re-blocking and road works in installment basis during weekends.

“It will be a one-time re-blocking this Holy Week. This will be short-term pain, long-term gain,” he added.

During the Holy week, work is suspended in government offices and private businesses.

He said this is the best time for DPWH contractors to finish road works and re-blocking activities at the entire stretch of EDSA since most people troop to the provinces to observe Holy Week.

Tagudando said the re-blocking at Edsa from Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City to Monumento in Caloocan City will be conducted round the clock.

“We will conduct re-blocking 24/7 so that we can finish it during the Holy Week,” he added.

He said the repair of EDSA’s northbound lane will start from Holy Tuesday until Good Friday while the southbound lane will start from Good Friday until Easter Sunday.

Based on the data of DPWH-NCR, at least 80,775 square meters of EDSA still needs to be repaired.

Tolentino expects that no road works and re-blockings will be conducted at EDSA after Holy Week, for this year.

Tolentino said the agreement will be presented during Metro Manila Council meeting today.
