Korean in rape case nabbed
CEBU CITY — After about six months of hiding, a Korean, who is facing charges of rape and acts of lasciviousness in Cebu, was collared by authorities in barangay Cervantes, Escalante, Negros Occidental. Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Director Cecil Ezra Sandalo said that intelligence information from a businessman has led to the arrest of Jong Keon Lee in Negros. Using cellphones equipped with cameras, the informants took a picture of Lee and sent it to the CCPO through e-mail, said Sandalo. Regional Trial Court Branch 24 Judge Olegario Sarmiento issued a warrant for the arrest of Lee on Dec. 19, 2003 for two counts of rape and 10 counts of acts of lasciviousness. No bail was recommended for his release. Last June, several minors complained to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 7 that Lee, with the help of his secretary Alona Sala, lured them with scholarships and then turned them into sex slaves. Lee reportedly did not resist arrest but told the policemen that his case was already settled amicably. (Mars Mosqueda Jr.)

Cop toys with gun, kills self
GENERAL SANTOS CITY — A police officer of South Cotabato died when the gun he was toying with in an apparent attempt to scare his wife went off, blasting his head, police said. Senior Police Officer 2 Edwin Pagdatu, 45, chief of Kababayan outpost in Sto. Niño town, South Cotabato, died of a lone bullet wound in the head, Senior Supt. Romeo Rufino, police chief of South Cotabato, said. "SPO2 Pagdatu was toying with his gun, pointing the barrel at his head when it fired, fatally hitting him in the head," Rufino told reporters. Efforts to save his life by family members who rushed Pagdatu to the nearest hospital in Sto. Niño failed. Mayor Ervin Luntao, the attending surgeon, declared the police officer dead on arrival. Although a gun club member, Pagdatu, who reportedly smelled of liqour, apparently had mental lapses. He might have accidentally pressed the trigger of his 9 mm service pistol. Rufino said Chief Inspector Vic Carreon, Sto. Niño police chief, reported that shortly before the tragic incident, Pagdatu had a fallout with his wife and jokingly scared his wife by pointing his firearm at his temple. "This must serve as lesson to other police officers and owners of gun not to toy with their guns," Rufino said. (Bong Reblando)
