The investigation into the ''Kawal Pilipino'' deepened after the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) found out that a ranking political figure could have contacted Council on Philippine Affairs (COPA) secretary -general Pastor ''Boy'' Saycon to recruit disgruntled Philippine Army officers to the group.
This was bared by a ranking NBI official who spoke on condition of anonymity, stressing that they are still gathering more proof against the political figure for reported involvement to ''Kawal.''
The NBI source also refused to give the identity of the political figure pending further investigation of the reported distabilization plot against the present administration.
''The political figure is the one who contacted Saycon and ordered the latter (Saycon) to recruit the disgruntled Army officers needed for their broadcast,'' said the NBI source.
The NBI source added that the politician is the one who reportedly funded the venture and the same person who ordered Saycon to go on a recruiting binge.
The source also said that the politician was ''wise'' to limit his contacts with Saycon as this gave him much needed deniability when the enterprise went awry.
Five Army officers and four civilians were charged before the Department of Justice (DOJ) for their part in the ''Kawal Pilipino'' plot but prosecutors are still to identify and tagged the real masterminds. (Jeamma E. Sabate)
