THE Filipino people have the distinction of demonstrating the other side of revolution – one that is peaceful and bloodless. And this occurred from February 22 to 25, 1986, when, through their collective will, they overthrew an authoritarian rule that had reigned throughout the country since 1972.
The Philippine revolution that happened in February 1986, is unique in the annals of mankind. It captured the world’s admiration and respect. Ending the rule of one man and his minions of armed followers without a shot fired was unprecedented. This success of the Filipino people showed to the world that a powerful dictator can be unseated from his seat of power bloodlessly.
"People Power’’ is the title given by historians to what happened in the country in February 1986. It demonstrated that the people’s will, if manifested collectively, can overwhelm an entrenched ruler and an arsenal of guns, gold, and goons.
We celebrate the People Power Revolution to preserve the historic lesson that entrenched power holders are no match for the will of the people.
