Shell to sell ‘improved’ gas products

Funded by a $1.6-million research work back in its headquarters in the United Kingdom, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation can now offer improved gasoline products, in terms of fuel efficiency and emission standards, to its domestic customers.

According to Samuel G. de Guzman, the Philippines is already the ninth country to be offered this new and improved fuel product by the oil firm, at no extra cost.

Dubbed as the "Better Mileage" formula for its Super Premium, Super Unleaded and Velocity brands, the product was first launched in various countries around the world, to include Malaysia, Singapore, Hongkong, Thailand, United States, Puerto Rico, Chile and Switzerland.

"It is now available in the market starting today (March 15). Its introduction is part of the company’s long-standing commitment to provide customers with innovative fuel products that meet their needs for their everyday lives," de Guzman said.

Meanwhile, Shell general manager for corporate affairs Roberto S. Kanapi emphasized that the product was first retailed in 50 stations nationwide. Of these stations, 19 are located in Metro Manila along high-traffic volume thoroughfares.

Shell Fuels Brand Manager Randolph T. del Valle, on the other hand, noted that the reformulated gasoline product boasts of improved efficiency by addressing the needs of the fuel system, such as minimizing deposits, improving combustion and reducing friction.

"This unique approach to achieving efficiency allows motorists to go the distance with less fuel consumption. With reduced fuel consumption, the burden on an already strained daily budget is lessened especially during these hard times," he said.

Del Valle further stressed that after extensive research work on the product, Shell had undertaken actual field testing on the efficiency of fuels on at least 15 sample vehicles.

Asked if an expanded marketing of the product in the country would still necessary, he noted that there might not a need anymore; because the tests in England actually included Asian vehicles in the sample.

Such field testing, he noted, gives Pilipinas Shell the confidence of the fuel’s compatibility to the make of cars plying the Philippine roads.

In addition, Shell customers who would patronize the product are also assured of improved level of emissions; particularly on greenhouse gases or GHG.

"At the same time, the product also has the ability to keep the car’s engine clean," said Leon Haliburton, Shell technical manager for East fuels.

Overall, the oil company is setting out commitment that its reformulated product has already been proven to benefit vehicles of all types and ages including motor bikes and cars with fuel injection, catalytic converters or carbureted engines.

"The Better Mileage gasoline readily meets the growing demand for quality yet affordable fuel products that also offers more mileage," Shell officials stressed.
