65 mendicants rescued in Pasay

At least 65 individuals were rescued from the streets of Pasay in the continuing program of Pasay City Mayor Wenceslao “Peewee” B. Trinidad to free the city’s major thoroughfares from streetchildren, street families, psychotic vagrants and Badjao mendicants. Such untiring efforts of the city government is pursuant to Presidential Decree 1563 or the law establishing an integrated system for the control and eradication of mendicacy.

In a rescue operation report submitted to Mayor Trinidad, the Reception and Action Center of Pasay, in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development National Capital Region, Philippine National Police Southern Police District through the Office of the Chief of Police of Pasay City, conducted the operations in response to a growing clamor from residents and tourists to free the streets from these eyesores.

The continuing rescue operations aim to take away the street dwellers from the hazards of the street specifically from motorists and provide them with appropriate social services upon review of their immediate needs.

The 65 individuals rescued were taken to the Reception and Action center (RAC) located at the second floor of the Pasay Public Market and were interviewed for profiling and processing. Twenty-nine of those rescued were Badjao mendicants frequently seen begging along Pasay Taft Rotonda using babies and children to generate alms from public commuters and motorists. There were four streetchildren referred to the Social Development Center (SDC). At the SDC, the children will be joining other previously rescued streetchildren for temporary care and shelter. There were also three younger children who were taken to the Ahon Bata Center. On the other hand, the rescued street dwellers and Badjaos who wish to return to their respective provinces were offered assistance through the "Balik Probinsya Program" with free transportation and other basic services.

Upon receipt of the rescue operation report, Mayor Trinidad instructed the Pasay City Social Welfare and Development Office to conduct follow-up operations and intensify its efforts to totally free the streets from mendicants and vagrants. Other information campaigns aimed at discouraging these sectors from staying on the streets to beg are also being carried out.
