Bank rob loot: P300,000

More than R300,000 in cash was taken by the eleven men who robbed a bank  and wounded  two persons last Thursday afternoon in Muntinlupa City.

This was learned yesterday from Muntinlupa City police chief, Supt. Ernesto Sanchez, who said the bank robbery  at the Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) branch along the busy Alabang-Zapote Road showed a pattern.

“This information on the pattern of the robbery will still be subject to validation,” Sanchez said.
In a report gathered by the police, it was learned that the bank has been robbed three times for the past 12 years.

In the early part of 1993, the bank was robbed by armed men who got thousands of pesos.
Between February and March of 1999, the same bank was robbed by  armed men with the police establishing an inside job.

Sanchez, however, said his men are reviewing police files on bank robberies.

The police chief added that they are looking into the possibility of an inside job. (James I. Catapusan)

Labor group wins  elections

The 100,000-strong All Workers Alliance Trade Unions (AWATU), headed by former labor congressman Temistocles “Tim” S. Dejon won  over the NFWU-Kilusang Mayo Uno in  certification elections involving 200 rank-and-file workers of the G. Liner in Taytay, Rizal, last May 14.

Dejon said that results of the run-off certification elections between AWATU and NFWU-KMU showed that AWATU-KMGL with 149 votes as against GLEU-NFWU’s 57 votes. There was only one spoiled vote and no challenged votes.

The KMGL-AWATU campaign was a team effort of the following officers with the help of AWATU officials: Fortunato A. Bonquin, president; Edwin A. Bulilan, VP; Leonardo S. Arnaiz, secretary; Ernesto M. Mauro, treasurer; Mario T. Yabut, Jr., auditor; Rolan N. Lorenzo, Robert C. Cacuela, P.RO.; Jerry M. Seneil, Rolando Patiag, sergeants.-at-arms; Joemarie Alvarez, Remy B. Borres, Roberto Bermeo, Antonio C. Bolilan, Rodrigo Cabututan, Emoc Belgica, and Danilo S. Sago,  directors; Cornelio C. Santiago, Conrado P. Parras, Juanito Salvo, Jr., Efren Pastorpili, Socorro B. Sapno, and Samuel Dejon, all  of AWATU.

Dejon attributed AWATU-KMGL’s victory to the all-out  efforts of the wives of drivers and conductors who conducted a house-to-house campaign, assuring members that AWATU will work for their security of tenure as it opposed militant actions, strikes and closures as espoused by other unions. (ET)

Dengue season on

The Department of Health (DoH) announced yesterday that it is ready for the dengue season and urged the public to take precautions to avoid the fatal mosquito-borne disease.

Earlier, the DoH declared June as “Dengue Awareness Month” since cases of dengue fever usually surge during the rainy season.

“This is dengue season once more, and we enjoin the public to bring a person suspected to have dengue to the nearest hospital for an early diagnosis and rule out dengue hemorrhagic fever,” Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit said.

The DoH said that there were a total of 2,332 dengue cases and 16 deaths in hospitals nationwide from Jan. 1 to May 15 this year. But the National Epidemiology Center (NEC) reported a 58 percent decrease in the number of dengue cases this year than in the past year.

Dengue fever is spread by the aedes aegypti, a mosquito that thrives in stagnant water and feeds during the day. It is characterized by  abrupt fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, and appearance of rashes over the chest and upper limbs. The disease affects all ages, but most patients are children until 15 years old. (Jenny Manondo)
