AS we celebrate the 106th year of Philippine independence, we, as a nation that has gone through several difficulties and momentous transitions, should remind ourselves that through unity and with our innate capabilities and power, the ideal of a Strong Republic is within reach. This reminder is so vividly captured by the theme of this year’s Independence Day celebration Kalayaan: Lakas at Pagkakaisa sa Matatag na Republika (“Independence: Power and Unity for a Strong Republic’’), as well as the slogan “Pilipino… ang galing mo!’’
With today’s celebration led by the Department of Tourism (DoT) in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd), the National Historical Institute (NHI), the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the private sector, the festivities will be highlighted by the yearly parade in front of the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park.
The parade and the subsequent program will cover the struggles that we Filipinos have gone through to secure and strengthen our independence – the strength of our Armed Forces, the prowess shown by Filipinos in our early years as a nation, and the vision and achievements of the national government and the programs of its various agencies, with specific attention to the current administration’s flagship programs. Awarding ceremonies will highlight the world-class talent of the Filipinos in the performing arts, sports, and other ventures. Other highlights of today’s celebration will be the unveiling of the Best of Wow Philippines exhibits, bazaars and cultural presentations, and a fireworks display called
Pakulay sa Kalayaan 2004.
The 106th Anniversary of Philippine Independence Day is an ideal occasion for Filipinos to come together as one nation and rally behind the government and the country’s institutions. Let us join hands in commemorating the strength of our nation.
