Employers set jobs fair, help firms fill vacancies

Trade chambers led by the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECoP) are holding a jobs fair this August 23 and 24 as a parallel event of the Employers Summit on Employment and Industrial Relations at the Philippine Trade and Training Center.

According to Ecop president Rene Y. Soriano, facilitating employment through the jobs fair is an initial contribution of the private sector to the agenda of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to create at least one million jobs a year during her six-year term.

The jobs fair is free to applicants, and is being coordinated with the Philippine Employment Services Office of the Department of Labor and Employment. The fair schedules are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 23 and from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on August 24 at the PTTC, corner Roxas Boulevard and Gil Puyat Avenue, Pasay City. Applicants at the site will be asked to register first with the PESO.

Companies scouting for new hires may join the jobs fair by contacting the Summit Secretariat.

Soriano said that a side event of the jobs fair are seminars by career coaches on how job applicants can improve their chances of qualifying for vacancies.

Many applicants, even honor students, fail to land jobs because they lack the skills to present themselves well, and answer with confidence during interviews, he said.

Soriano said that the Employers Summit on Employment and Industrial Relations brings together some 300 business leaders from small, medium and large companies.

They will discuss what the private sector can do on their own to protect and create jobs, and what the private sector can do together with government to help improve the business climate and cultivate employment.
