Robber gets scare of his life

CEBU CITY — A robber got the scare of his life yesterday when the woman he tried to rob was able to wrestle from him his fan knife and turned the weapon on him. Police said the suspected robber, identified only as Macmac, immediately scampered away after Maribeth Duaso, his supposed victim, managed to grab the knife at dawn yesterday on A. Soriano St., this city. Duaso told the police that she had just disembarked from a jeepney when the robber poked a fan knife at her and demanded her cellular phone. However, she did not give in to the demand of the robber, and a scuffle ensued. Moments later, Duaso was able to wrestle the knife and poked it at the surprised robber who immediately ran away. It was not learned if Duaso had skills in martial arts. (MWM)

MINDANAO

4 more bandits surrender

GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Four more notorious bandits operating at the boundaries of Sarangani, Davao del Sur, Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato have surrendered in Malungon, Sarangani. The surrender came after police and Army troopers killed the bandits’ chieftain, Morella Zalda. This was followed by the surrender of Morella’s brother Gramo Zalda, said Chief Supt. Antonio Billones, Central Mindanao police chief. Since last June, eight bandits have surrendered, Billiones said. Commander Morella was tagged as the most wanted criminal in Malungon, Sarangani, Kiblawan in Davao del Sur and Polomolok, South Cotabato. He was said to be responsible for strings of murder, frustrated murder, robbery-in-band and cattle-rustling cases. Quoting a report of Supt. Casimiro Medes, Sarangani police chief, Billones identified the surrenderees as Simplicio Dacoy, Lito Barasan, Lito Cambang and Tong Cambang, all B’laans. "The four surrendered because of the intense police-Army operations against bandits and the government’s amnesty program," Billones said. He and Col. Alfredo Cayton, 601st infantry brigade chief, launched a manhunt against lawless elements in the villages of Malungon. This led to the killing of Commander Morella, Zalda and an aide. The four bandits yielded one AK47-type homemade shotgun, four 12-gauge shotguns with five live bullets and one Springfield rifle with six live bullets. (Bong Reblando)
