CAMP JUAN VILLAMOR, Abra – Armed men, believed to be killers-for-hire, shot dead recently the president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) in La Paz town. Police suspected politics was behind the killing.
Senior Supt. Art Hicban, Abra police director, identified the victim as Ruben Afoas, of Pidipid, La Paz town.
Hicban said the victim, together with a companion, was waiting for a barge for home along the Abra River, when four armed men on two motorcycles suddenly arrived and shot the victim. The victim died from seven bullet wounds on the spot.
The victim’s companion, however, Col. Hicban said, returned fire, hitting one of the attackers, but he escaped. Hicban said police are hunting the wounded attacker in all hospitals and clinics here and in nearby provinces.
Hicban expressed fears that relatives of the victim might take revenge soon. (MS)
SWAT teams in Bataan
CAMP TOLENTINO, Bataan — In his bid to have a ready “reaction force” that will immediately respond to crises and emergencies, Supt. Elmer M. Macapagal, new police director, said yesterday he has formed two teams of SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics), composed of highly trained policemen in Bataan.
In his talk with Rep. Abet S. Garcia, 2nd district, Bataan, Macapagal said he had already organized the SWAT team that can help whoever is in need, anywhere and anytime in Bataan. “The SWAT teams are well trained, disciplined, and have high-powered guns, and can move anytime in times of emergencies,” Macapagal told Garcia.
Concerned about the peace and order, particularly in his district, Garcia vowed his full suppport to the police. Garcia also assured Macapagal of funds for the construction of the Bachelors’ Office Quarters and the renovation of other PNP offices in Camp Tolentino, headquarters of the Bataan PNP.
Macapagal’s men in Dinalupihan recently recovered a hijacked van with goods worth thousands of pesos. The goods were recovered intact, together with the van, Macapagal said.
Upon learning the hijack incident, Macapagal immediately flashed an alarm to all his police stations, resulting in the recovery of the stolen items. The suspected hijackers, however, have escaped and are now being hunted by police. (Mar T. Supnad)
Subic Garden award rites set
The country’s “Most Outstanding Horticulturist-Entrepreneurs” will be honored during the soft opening of the Subic Botanical Peace Garden on July 31 (Saturday) at 9 a.m. at the Naval Magazine inside the Ilanin Forest of the Subic Bay Freeport Zone in Zambales.
The winners, the project organizers said, are the Confederation of Women Network Foundation Inc. (CWNFI) and the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) are: Amado Magpanay, Dodie Santiago, Charita Puentespina, Will D. Hahn, and Juan Sajid Imao.
Rosellyn Magsaysay, CWNFI president, said: “It is high time an awards program is started to honor horticulturists and landscape designers and to show their works for the public’s appreciation in the heart of a rising world-class botanical garden.”
The jurors are noted horticulturists and botanical garden aficionados and experts Zac Sarian, Dr. Leonido Naranja, Dr. Rudy Fernandez and Magsaysay. Chief executive officer (CEO) of the Subic Botanical Peace Garden.
