BAYAMBANG, Pangasinan — Business leader Cezar T. Quiambao recently urged Mayor Leocadio “Boy” de Vera to crack down on jueteng, cattle rustling, and other crimes in the town.
Quiambao personally funded from his personal money, the construction of the multi-million peso public plaza and other improvements in the town. He was lauded for paying his taxes in Bayambang from his business firms in Metro Manila “to help speed up the town’s modernization.”
A recent report about a local government task force that raided jueteng operations, resulted in the arrest of 19 persons found in possession of firearms and ammunition. The guns had no police permits.
Jueteng is reportedly rampant in Sitio Pukdol, Barangay Bani.
At presstime, Mayor de Vera could not be reached for comment.
As this developed, Archbishop Oscar Cruz assured Interior and Local Government Secretary Angelo Reyes of his unswerving support in the crackdown on jueteng.
Cruz said he has urged all priests in the province to press the anti-jueteng drive because “aside from being illegal, jueteng is a vice that destroys families.”
Sr. Supt. Mario Sandiego, police director, said the raid in Bayambang “ was not coordinated with my office.” (Jun Velasco)

Feast day of St. Ignatius
The Universal Church and the Jesuits celebrate the feast day of St. Ignatius of Loyola today. Masses and novenas will be offered in his honor by the religious order that he founded, the Society of Jesus (SJ).
Born Iñigo de Loyola in 1491 in the Basque province of Guipuzcoa in northern Spain, Saint Ignatius is the youngest of 13 children. During his youth, he dreamt of pursuing a military career until he broke his leg during the siege of Pamplona in 1521. While recovering, he read books on the life of Christ and the saints that eventually led to his conversion.
Formally approved by Pope Paul III on Sept. 27, 1540, the Society of Jesus’ (Latin name: Societes Jesu) motto is “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam” which means “For the greater glory of God.” Known for their spiritual and intellectual formation, the Jesuits operated with zeal in schools, charitable institutions, and missions. Before 1548, Jesuit-run schools were set up in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and India. As the superior general of the Society of Jesus, Saint Ignatius directed the new society worldwide. Saint Ignatius is the patron saint of spiritual retreats and soldiers. His religious experience was written in the famous Spiritual Exercises, which Pope Pius XI described as “the wisest and most universal spiritual code for guiding the soul on the path to salvation.”
Saint Ignatius said that through the Spiritual Exercises, it recognized “that not only the intellect but also the emotions and feelings can help us come to a knowledge of the action of the spirit in our lives.”
Until the day he died, Saint Ignatius busied himself teaching catechism to children, directing adults in spiritual exercise and helping the poor in hospitals. He was beatified on July 27, 1609 and canonized by Pope Gregory XV on March 12, 1622. (Christina Hermoso)
