Toshiba “Qosmio” a New Generation AV Notebook PC

Toshiba Singapore Pte Ltd, Computer Systems Division (South and Southeast Asia Regional Headquarters) advanced the convergence of mobile computing and high-grade audio visual capabilities with the announcement of “Qosmio,” pronounced “koss-mee-oh”, a new brand of PC, and a new type of PC that brings the unique 4-in-one experience of PC functionality, TV, audio and a DVD recorder to the consumer PC market.

Advances in digitization, including the transition to digital broadcasting, have long been welcomed as promoting the fusion of computing and AV sources. While companies have taken steps in this direction, including introducing PC with integrated AV features, the main target has been homes and products designed for use in a fixed place. Toshiba recognizes that content is no longer fixed, and understands that people today desire a private space – “My space” – where they can enjoy all types of digital AV content, anytime and anywhere, and to do so simply and easily, with high quality video and audio technologies. Inspired by this insight, Toshiba has pioneered the convergence of audio-visual and mobile computing capabilities through the global introduction of a new AV Notebook PC with a brand new concept and brand name – Qosmio.

Announcing the new brand name, Wu Tengguo, General Manager of Toshiba South and Southeast Asia Regional Headquarters, said: “Toshiba’s Qosmio series offers consumers a one-stop mobile solution and delivers a new level of value in an AV Notebook PC. With Qosmio, we are now free to enjoy all kinds of digital AV content anywhere, anytime. No other digital product offers this freedom or this level of performance. Qosmio establishes a whole new category of portable PCs.”

Qosmio: The new AV Notebook PC Brand Concept

Qosmio combines the English word “cosmos” with “mio”, an Italian word for “my”, to create “My cosmos”, or “My space”. By coining the word, Toshiba sought to create a new generation of notebooks that bring infinite possibilities within the user’s grasp, and created a brand that conveys the advanced, unique nature of an exciting new product category. The visual accent of Qosmio and the Qosmio logo, expresses the ideas of “novelty and innovation” and “unique existence” qualities Toshiba has cultivated since launching the world’s first portable PC in 1989. With Qosmio, Toshiba will continue to redefine the world of mobile computing and create another powerful new brand.

Qosmio: The new AV Notebook PC Concept

Qosmio is the first device in a new market category combining the advanced features of today’s powerful notebook with those of advanced AV products. The Qosmio series offers the cool, conscious consumer user with an all-in-one experience, incorporating PC functionality, TV, audio and a DVD recorder, while simplifying the home entertainment experience. With a High Luminance Clear SuperView LCD display, superior surround sound and a new video engine, the Qosmio series brings CDs, DVDs and video games to life around the home or on-the-go. At the heart of image playback is Toshiba’s proprietary “QosmioEngine”. This newly developed technology combines optimized image processing for diverse image sources with a video enhancer dedicated to producing superb images in the Windows® environment. Image quality is further enhanced by the Qosmio display, an “High Luminance Clear SuperView LCD technology”. The display achieves a brightness of 600cd/m2, surpassing that of LCD TVs, by integrating two backlights, while dual filter coatings reduce diffusion of internal light and reflection of ambient light to reproduce clear, high contrast images.
