Vivendi releases new video game

Global media giant Vivendi Universal Games (VUG) is stepping up its presence in the Philippines this year by launching more video games on the market through its licensee Asian Media Development Group (AMDG).

Last week, VUG and AMDG formally launched the much-acclaimed Ground Control II before trade partners. The action-packed strategy war game had simultaneous launches in Korea, Malaysia, China and the Philippines.

Gerry Castro, AMDG vice president, said the launching is part of the company’s aggressive expansion and to further boost its presence in the electronic entertainment market. Castro had earlier announced that Vivendi through AMDG would be expanding its product line by introducing more video games this year.

Last March 27, VUG and AMDG also launched the popular sequel to Counter-Strike, CounterStrike: Condition Zero. Counter-Strike continues to be the world’s most popular war game with an estimated 2 million players addicted to it and sales revenues of $75 million worldwide.

Vivendi is the publisher of computer game titles such as Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, Half-Life and CounterStrike, which have been distributed exclusively by AMDG since 2002.

Castro aired confidence on the success of Ground Control II due to the overwhelming acceptance of the product in North America and Asia. The new game was developed by Massive Entertainment, a Swedish game developer affiliated with Vivendi.

"It is a real-time tactics game set in a science-fiction setting. The game delivers explosive, action-packed gameplay, focusing on squad tactics, with full use of the 3D battlefield," said Castro.

Video games have beefed up the local Internet café industry, where more and more shops have been introducing video games into their operations to draw in more customers. Locally, there are around 100,000 regular players of PC games based on industry statistics.

Castro said Ground Control II offers outstanding details of graphics, 22 million of action-packed combat, cooperative multiplay of up to eight players and an immersive storyline written in collaboration with noted science-fiction author Joe Dever.

The game’s story puts you in the role of Jacob Angelus, a captain in the Northern Star Alliance. Your home planet, Morningstar Prime, is currently under siege by Imperial Terran forces led by the ruthless Imperator Vlaana. As you make your way through the campaign, an alien race, known as the Virons, will eventually get involved in both sides of the conflict.
