MMDA to continue installing male urinals

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said it would continue to install more pink urinals in Metro Manila despite widespread criticisms.

MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando explained that a lot more people benefit from the urinal project compared to the number of critics who opposed its construction.

"Of all the shortcomings of the MMDA, it is the lowly urinals they are spending much time criticizing. I think I have to thank them," a smiling Fernando said.

Fernando, however, noticed that his detractors have used the media to put him down and make it appear that his projects at the MMDA are a complete failure.

A consensus among public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers lauded the MMDA for the pink urinals stressing their convenience when trying to relieve themselves on the road.

Taxi driver Alex Agustin noted that the pink urinals have made it easier for them to answer the call of nature without publicly exposing themselves.

He added that the urinals are a welcome relief for lowly drivers like him because small eateries where they take their meals usually have only one or no comfort rooms at all.

Others were critical of the MMDA project due to the foul smell it emits when not properly cleaned.

Since thousands of males have used the doorless urinals daily, Fernando’s detractors demanded that the agency maintain the cleanliness of the structures.

They maintained that majority of the male population continue to relieve themselves against the walls and electric posts despite the 418 male urinals in the metropolis.

Fernando insisted that urinals are big improvement over the unsightly males urinating on the roadsides, against perimeter fences or even beside parked vehicles.

He pointed out that the stench from the urinals are natural due to the number of males using them despite the regular maintenance done by the MMDA Landscape Maintenance Group.

The MMDA also traced the foul smell to the improper use of the male urinals where users splatter urine all over the iron sides of the facility.

Agustin reminded fellow urinal users that they are responsible to use any public facilities properly to ease the maintenance and clean-up load of the government.
