Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez, all-time favorite balladeer Basil Valdez, and The Maestro Ryan Cayabyab join the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra and the San Miguel Master Chorale in “Klasik Kayumanggi,“ two evenings of Filipino music favorites at CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo aired as a two-part special on ABC, 9 p.m. Sundays-August 22 and 29 respectively.
“Klasik Kayumanggi” features Velasquez interpreting the movie theme songs of Willy Cruz and Valdez performing his hits written by George Canseco. From “Dahil sa Iyo” to “Mr. Suave” from “Maalaala Mo Kaya” to “Mi Ultimo Adios,” the SMPO and SMMC will also present orchestral and choral arrangements of love songs, folk melodies and pop tunes, including the works of Ernani Cuenco such as “Gaano Ko Ikaw Kamahal” played by the SMPO under the baton of Arnel Feliciano. Some of these classics are taken from “Great Filipino Love Songs,” the debut solo album of the SMPO also conducted by Feliciano.
The SMPO is joined by the SMMC conducted by Eudenice Palaruan in favorites like “Iduyan Mo,” “Paraiso,” and “Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka,” all composed and arranged by Mr. C himself, Ryan Cayabyab. Several a capella numbers will also highlight the SMMC- current holder of an Aliw Award as best choral group.
Mr. C then takes over the conductor’s podium as guest artist Basil Valdez dishes out his signature hits like “Kastilyong Buhangin,” “Salamin ng Buhay” and the ever-popular “Ngayon at Kailanman” in a section of George Canseco’s music. Mr. C will also lead the SMPO in a musical medley of recent dance hit tunes. The concert finale is Mr. C’s setting of “Mi Ultimo Adios” for orchestra and choir, a fitting tribute to our national hero, Jose Rizal.
This all-Filipino concert is in line with the mission of the San Miguel Foundation for the Performing Arts to promote Filipino music of the highest quality.
