Morales wants Pacquiao, but fight is set next year

ERIK MORALES, the Mexican boxing icon known as “El Terible” because of the terrible damage he could inflict at an opponent, wants Manny Pacquiao.

And he wants him next year after he faces Marco Antonio Barrera, with Pacquiao completing the final domino of his dream to sweep the 130 lb division. Afterwards, he said, he intends to move up to the next weight level where he hopes to make the same damage to those who intend to cross his path.

Morales disclosed his fight plans during a press conference yesterday to build up his coming match with Barrera on Nov. 27.

Morales’ plan to meet Pacquiao is small consolation for the popular Filipino boxer who has been left out of megabuck fights in his division even as he continues his training in Los Angeles at the same time that his handlers are burning phone lines offering their fighter to anyone with similar stature.

So far, there had been no takers for Pacquiao. In contrast, others in his division had been very busy.

Juan Antonio Marquez, against whom he fought a drag-out 12-round draw, recently fought in the undercard of the Oscar de la Hoya-Bernard Hopkins encounter, and now Barrera, whom he ravaged last year, is scheduled to meet Morales.

Meantime, Morales is taking all comers.

"Our plan is to sweep the 130-lb division. After Barrera, I want Manny Pacquiao before moving up in the lightweight division," Morales said.

Morales, 28, is the current WBC superfeatherweight champion.

Morales has a record of 47-1 with 34 knockouts and is coming off a victory over IBF champion Carlos "Famoso" Hernandez on July 31 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Morales was however stripped of the IBF belt for failing to ask for an exemption of his mandatory title defense versus top contender Robbie Peden.

Morales is 18-1 in world title fights including wins over Barrera, Jesus ‘El Matador’ Chavez, Paulie Ayala, Wayne McCullough, Junior Jones and Daniel Zaragoza.

Meanwhile, WBC Executive Director Mauricio Sulaiman doubts at the possibility of Pacquiao dethroning Morales should the two finally face each other next year.

"With all due respect to all the boxers in the world, I don’t see anyone beating Erik Morales. He’s in his prime, he has power, tremendous boxing skills and also heart. So I don’t see anyone defeating him in that division right now." Said Sulaiman who, ironically is also a Mexican.

But Sulaiman admits that Pacquiao can match Morales with his punching power.

"I don’t think Pacquiao can match his boxing skills. But he can match Erik for power, so there will be opportunity to get this factor into the fight." Added Sulaiman.

Sulaiman also said that a Morales-Pacquiao match may probably happen middle of next year.
