Reinventing Sherwin Ordoñez

How do you reinvent yourself?

Change is inevitable. Sometimes you have to submit to changes to keep your focus in life on track. It doesn’t really mean total transformation – it could be a slight diversion on your priorities, a modification of genres, a shift in interest, or simply a new haircut.

For actor Sherwin Ordoñez, change arrived in different forms. At first, it was a move from dancing to acting. He was then part of a boy group, Abstract Dancers, when he got the break to enter showbiz. In his group, he was one of the more fortunate ones who truly got recognition, along with fellow dancers like Dingdong Avanzado and Michael Flores.

He became a regular in the variety show SOP before he was offered to be part of the local super hero show, Pintados. His boy-next-door aura made him perfect for a role in the teen series, Click. From Click, he did a number of other TV shows such as Ikaw Lang Ang Mamahalin, Beh Bote Nga, and now, Nuts Entertainment.

Despite his easy-going roles, Sherwin has been drawn more to serious acting, particularly, drama. His various stints taught him a lot of things, such how to get proper lighting during takes, where to get the energy called for by the role, attitude towards his career, and how to get along with people (not just with fellow actors, but the "small people" behind the set).

The shift from being a normal person to a celebrity has brought both good and bad changes to Sherwin. Although he enjoys the recognition, the autograph-signing, plus the perks of being famous (like a sizeable check and traveling a lot), he still hopes that he could keep vital things in life, like "privacy". He doesn’t like it when some people tend to make stories whenever he goes out with his lady friends.

"MInsan hindi ko alam kung matutuwa ako or hindi. Hindi mo tuloy alam kung gusto ba talaga nila sa ‘yo o ayaw." He’s not complaining. It’s just that, he found out, that you can’t really please everybody. Looking at the brighter side, though, he loves his career because he was able to meet a lot of people and establish friendships with them.

"My career is like Friendster, and daming connections!" Sherwin jokes. With this, he met his chemist friend who helped him with his newfound opportunity, that is entrepreneurship. Sherwin establishes his own line of scents, Winfresh that offers perfumes, body scrubs, and lotions.

With three stalls to manage – one in Araneta Square (Monumento, Caloocan), Circle C and Cherry Fooderama (both on Congressional Avenue in Quezon City), Sherwin enjoys the nature of the business since he personally loves perfumes!

Talking on vanity, Sherwin doesn’t fuss much about his looks since the only beauty regimen he has is making sure that he washes off his make-up after shows. His workout is dancing and a few sessions of badminton on the side.

As for fashion, Sherwin reveals that he’s not into shopping. He’s a simple person who gets ideas on what clothes to wear from shows and movies he has seen. But now that he’s been tapped as the image model of Le Froge, Sherwin believes his fashion problem has definitely gone down to a minimum. He can now get clothes that he could style to look very trendy.

"Not a lot of people know that Le Froge has changed its image. Before, the brand was known to be a sports apparel, but now it has club wears and street wears," explains Le Froge’s top honcho, Marilene Go.

"Also, we believes that Sherwin is perfect for the brand since both are re-establishing their image – Le Froge as street and club wear, and Sherwin from matinee idol to a more serious actor and businessman", further explains Le Froge consultant, Eugene Ramos.

The fresh look of the brand compliments the personality of Sherwin. The clean lines that are often easy to pair with sweaters or jackets allow flexibility so the actor can experiment with his looks.

"I’m not a big dresser, hindi nga ako mahilig sa abubot or accessories, but with the clothes I have now, I’m no longer afraid to experiment with how my look would be, with or without accessories," says Sherwin, who admitted that he becomes a conscious-dresser whenever he has shows. "That’s because my socializing is done during work. I think I’ve outgrown going out on gimmicks."
