Don’t blame us for traffic chaos, says MMDA

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said yesterday that it should not be blamed for the traffic chaos at the intersection of C-5 and Kalayaan Avenue in Makati City.

This after the Makati’s Department of Public Safety re-opened the intersection and abolished the U-turn slots that was put up by MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando.

Fernando said the local officials, not the MMDA, are the ones who must bear the responsibility for whatever would happen in the intersection.

Makati has taken over the intersection and put up an outpost for its own traffic personnel, effectively displacing the MMDA traffic enforcers that had been stationed in the area.

"If they think they have the responsibility in the place (C-5/Kalayaan intersection), then they might as well be held responsible for whatever would happen there," Fernando said, chastising the local officials of Makati.

The Makati’s Department of Public Safety, in a daring move, removed the concrete barriers and blocked the U-turn slots constructed by the MMDA, saying the U-turn scheme only worsened traffic along C-5 Road.

But the MMDA-Metrobase reported much heavier traffic in the area, particularly from Ortigas Flyover to C-5 Kalayaan, right after the Makati City restored the intersection. (Chito Chavez)
