Several commuters were annoyed when the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) operations suddenly stopped after a large tarpaulin caught in one of its cable wires at 6:30 yesterday morning.
MRT spokesperson Marian Gui said the tarpaulin, depicting an advertisement of Sogo Hotel, was apparently blown away from its steel frame by strong winds.
The tarpaulin landed at the MRT’s Magallanes station where it was seen hanging in one of its overhead capillary system (OCS).
"We were forced to stop operations because of it. The OCS are high tension wires and thus dangerous for us to pull out," Gui said.
The Makati City government, meanwhile, continues its operations on proliferating billboards that are structurally unsound.
City officials continue to remind advertisers against the indiscriminate construction of billboards on places that are not approved by the city’s zoning board.
Joselito Salgado, Information and Community Relations Department (ICRD) chief, said advertisers should take responsibility of the billboards they erected.
"These have corresponding penalties especially if these billboards or advertisements had caused damage to private property," Salgado said.
The city of Makati has issued a moratorium suspending the installation of billboards around the city.
Effective February 22, the city will remove billboards that do not comply with the city’s zoning standards and those put up in residential areas to promote public safety and order.
