As the Philippine government continues to pursue for the additional Value Added Tax (VAT) on all basic needs, most sectors in society are appealing to Malacañang to totally "scrap" the proposal. But President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said that it is needed to improve the economy.

Fargo’s visit reaffirms RP-US security cooperation
The visit of outgoing United States Commander of the Pacific Command (PACOM), Admiral Thomas Fargo has reaffirmed the continued close ties between the US and the Philippines on security issues, especially counterterrorism, the US Embassy in Manila announced yesterday.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo confers the Philippine Legion of Honor, with the rank of Commander, on Admiral Thomas Fargo, Chief of the US Pacific Command, in Malacañang. At right is US Ambassador Francis Ricciardone. Admiral Fargo reaffirmed the close ties between the Philippines and the United States on security issues during his farewell call in Malacañang. He also lauded the Philippine defense reform program initiated by the President, designed to improve the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The President thanked Admiral Fargo for helping the Philippine government achieve peace and stability during his tour of duty in the country. Earlier yesterday, the admiral called on Gen. Efren Abu, Chief of Staff of the AFP, at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City. (Ramon I. Samson)
